Strength Propaganda We Are Not Falling For!

There exists a lot of myths and propaganda around strength training, especially for women. Some include that lifting weights builds too much bulk, cardio is better for weight loss than strength training, no pain/no gain, etc. We have tackled a few of those myths and are busting them. Have a read, grab your mat and join us for a Strength class. Adding weights to your practice can be a game-changer and builds a well-rounded and strong practice.

Myth 1. Lifting Heavy Weight Makes You Bulky

Some people, particularly women, are concerned that adding strength training will build muscle bulk to the point they will look like a bodybuilder. This is just not true. For a woman to bulk up, she would have to do a lot of strength training…and I mean a lot. Women do not have enough testosterone to bulk up the way men do. Don’t be afraid to pick up those heavy dumbbells!

Myth 2. Cardio is Better for Weight Loss than Weight Training

A single weight-training session doesn’t typically burn as many calories as a cardio session, you still burn more calories overall if you strength train.

Resistance and weight training are more effective than cardio at building lean muscle, and muscle mass burns more calories at rest than other tissues, including fat.

Building muscle helps increase your resting metabolism!

Myth 3. No Pain, No Gain

While feeling uncomfortable during a workout is normal, feeling pain is not. Many live by the “no pain, no gain” motto, but pain is the way your body tells you that something is wrong. If you start to feel pain during a workout, stop 🛑 If you continue to push through it, you could end up with a serious injury.

Myth 4. Strength Training is Only for the Young

What strength training really does as we age:

* Prevents age-related muscle loss

* Increases bone density

* Boosts metabolism

* Improves joint health

* Enhances mental health

* Improves balance

* Supports independence

Weight training is beneficial at any age. Especially important as we get older!

Myth 5. Lifting Weights is Dangerous for Your Joints

In reality, lifting weights:

* Strengthens muscles around joints

* Improves joint alignment and movement mechanics

* Boosts joint lubrication

* Reduces pain and stiffness

* Strengthens tendons, ligaments, and bones

* Enhances balance and stability

Strength training keeps your joints healthy, stable, and pain-free!
